The Phil Spector Trial, Smashing Pumpkins, Spinal Tap

Legal News

Opening statements by the defense and prosecution began this week in the Phil Spector trial a jury of nine men and four women will decide if Spector had a hand in the death of Lana Clarkson who died four years ago at his mansion. Originally, It took authorities eight months to charge Spector after the incident he had previously been charged with "implied malice" alleging he did not intend to kill Clarkson but caused her death by reckless behavior and taking an extreme risk. Spector appeared tense as the opening statements were read against him.

Alan Jackson the chief prosecutor portrayed Spector as a man "who when he's confronted with the right circumstances, when he's confronted with the right situations, turns sinister and deadly." Jackson said "The evidence is going to paint a picture of a man who on Feb 3, 2003 put a loaded pistol in Lana Clarkson's mouth and shot her to death." The defense maintains that Clarkson's death was a suicide and that Spector had only known her for a few hours after meeting her at the House of Blues where she worked as a hostess in Los Angeles that evening. If found guilty Spector will be charged with second degree murder and spend fifteen years in prison.

Spinal Tap will reunite for the Live Earth Concert on July 7th in London. The original member of the mock heavy metal group will reunite they are guitarist Nigel Tufnel(Christopher Guest) singer David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean) and bass player Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer). Rob Reiner the director who created the 1984 mockumentry "This is Spinal Tap" will also be in attendance.
A new fifteen minute film directed by Reiner will be featured when the band reunites and will be later shown at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. The short film explains what the members of the band have been doing since their last reunion on the disc 'Break Like the Wind' released in 1992.
Nigel has been raising miniature horses but has been unable to find jockeys small enough to ride them. David is a hip-hop producer who runs a colonic clinic and Derek is in rehab for being addicted to the internet.

The Cranberries broke onto the music scene in 1994 with the song "Linger", and "Zombie" from the disc 'Everybody else is doing it, why can't we.' Their last disc was 2001's 'Wake up and Smell the Coffee' which barely showed up on the charts.
However, the lead singer Delores O'Riordan mentioned recently that a reunion is possible but currently she is working on her solo project. O'Riordan said that she completed her solo disc ' Are you listening? ' in a relaxed atmosphere while spending time with her children and family. Alot of the songs came from day to day living said O'Riordan it was a very natural and organic process where experimented with different beats, instruments.

My Chemical Romance has announced that Mikey Way lead singer Gerard Way's brother is to leave the band temporarily to spend time with his new wife. The couple were married on March 8th and the band has been touring behind their new disc ' The Black Parade.' On the bands official website Gerard said "The band has decided to give (mike) and his wife a much needed break from the road to start a life and have a proper honeymoon and do all the things a newlywed couple should do." It isn't known how long Mikey will be away and a replacement hasn't been named.

The White Strips celebrate ten years as a band this year and with their new release "Icky Thump" due out June 19th they will embark on a North American tour this summer where they will play a variety of unconventional venues. The Raconteurs a side project of Jack White of the White Stripes are working on a follow up to their 2006 debut 'Broken Boy Soldiers.' They are working at Blackbird Studio in Nashville, TN and have twelve songs written and hope to have a new disc out next year. They are trying to get as much done before Jack White's first band The White Stripes goes on tour behind their new disc.

The Arctic Monkey's new release 'Favourite Worst Nightmare' has only sold 85,000 units during its first day of release which was Monday. Their first disc ' Whatever, people say I am, That's What I'm Not' which debut in January of 2006 sold 363,735 copies in a week in the UK and 108,000 on the first day it was released. Perhaps, their antics off stage and outside the studio are more interesting than their musical talent.

Marilyn Manson new disc titled 'Eat Me, Drink Me' which debuts June 5th will have 11 tracks and was recorded with guitarist/bassist Tim Skold. The recent divorce of Manson from Dita Von Teese seems to have been influenced his choice of titles and his anger about the breakup. On the track "The Red Carpet Grave" he sings "I can't turn my back on you when you walk away," and he seems reflective on "They said Hell's not Hot" which features the lyric "I kill myself in small amount/in each relationship it's not about love/just another funeral and just another girl left in tears."
Manson and his band will be on the road and perform at the Pink Pop festival in Landgraaf, Holland on May 26. A tour of North America will begin in early July but the dates where he will perform are not set at this time. Manson continues to work and direct his film "Phantasmagoria; The Visions of Lewis Carroll" in which he stars as the Alice in Wonderland author.

The Beastie Boys will release a new disc 'The Mix Up' in June it will be a return to the band's original sound. They will be playing instruments on the entire disc instead of sampling as they had done previously. According to Mike D "There's more rock on there,it might make you flip your wig right off, or your hairpiece, if your a casual listener." Hopefully, this release will be better than the 2004 release "To the 5 Burroughs" which I actually bought thinking it would be an interesting disc well it turned out to be really dull.

The band Interpol is set to release their third album " Our Love To Admire" on July 10th and the first single will be "The Heinrich Maneuver" which sounds like an upbeat kiss off to an ex love. The rest of the disc visits familiar territory with the tracks "No I in Threesome" and "Mammoth" which use simple repeated guitar riffs and powerful bass. Some experimentation takes place on the other tracks the first one being "Pioneer to The Falls" which is a six minute funeral like dirge that features a vocal style similar to Jim Morrison. Another track "The Lighthouse" is an ambient piece which is somewhat of a departure from the bands usual sound,. "Rest My Chemistry" is soulful and spaced out the lyrics "I've slept for two days/ I've bathed in nothing but sweat."
Some of the new material Interpol was played during their just finished Canadian tour. However, they will debut the new material in front of a larger audience on April 27th at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, California. There are only three other shows in the U.S. this summer the rest of their schedule being dominated by international festivals to be held in Europe through late August.

The Police have announced that they will perform private fan club shows during their reunion tour this summer.
The first show will take place at GM Place in Vancouver, B.C. on May 27th tickets will not be available to the public they will only be made available to fan club members. The Police's 30th anniversary tour officially begins at the same venue on May 28th and the public will be able to attend.

The recent outcry of Don Imus calling the Rutgers women's basketball team a " bunch of nappy headed hos" and the eventually firing of Imus by CBS Radio has highlighted the hip hop industries use of those words without being responsible for them.
Russell SImmons of the Def Jam label held a private conference with influential music industry executives on Monday April 23rd to address the "growing public outrage" and discuss the racial and sexual epithets used in the industry. Simmons said that the three words "bitch","ho", and "nigga" should be considered extreme. Clean versions of hip hop discs don't use these words, however there isn't an industry standard as to what words can or cannot be used. The issue of freedom of speech cannot be ignored but those who produce the offensive material should be responsible for it.
In a statement from Simmons "Our discussions are about the corporate social responsibility of the industry to voluntarily show respect to African-American and other people of color, African-American women and to all women in lyrics and images."

Aretha Franklin is to hold auditions from May 1-3 in her hometown of Detroit, MI for a musical about the 65 year old queen of soul's life. The autobiographical musical will portray her at various ages of her life along with her friends, background singers, and musical colleagues.
Roles that are up for grabs are LaRue Mann her wardrobe mistress, a suitor Ken Cunnigham , and others such as Dinah Washington, Sam Cooke, Smokey Robinson, and pianist Art Tatum.
Franklin is best known for her hits "Respect", "Chain of Fools", and "Freeway of Love. "The musical is based on the 1999 best seller" Aretha; From these Roots" and will possibly premiere in March 2008 in Detroit Michigan

On Saturday April 21st a seven hour auction benefit was held for musicians who lost everything in hurricane Katrina at New York's Hard Rock Cafe by Julien's Auction and raised $2,436,900 plus a 20% buyers fee.
Some of the 200 items auctioned were a Gibson Les Paul guitar owned by U2's The Edge which brought $240,000 and his 1958 Gibson archtop which he has used on every tour since 1985 sold for only $ 105,000. A pair of John Lennon's round blue tinted glasses sold for $30,000. There was an assortment of other accessories used or worn onstage by members of U2 were also sold.

Phil Spector on trial, the murder of Jam Master Jay, and Morrissey snubs the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Legal Notes

The selection process for the Phil Spector murder trial finished up this week. A jury of nine men and three women were chosen after four days of questioning. They are to decide if the producer is guilty of the murder of Lana Clarkson who died of an apparent self inflicted shotgun to the head at Spector's home on Feb 3, 2003. However questions remain as to whether she killed herself or that Spector had a hand in her death.

Spector's chauffeur has stated to police that he saw Spector on the night in question holding a shotgun with what looked like blood on his hands and stating "I think I killed somebody," Spector has claimed that he is bipolar and on the night in question he hadn't been taking his medication regularly. He is also notorious for his fondness for guns and erratic often bizarre behavior when working with artists in the past.

The prosecutors have a difficult task before them because it has been near impossible not to find someone who hasn't heard some or all of the details of the case. This compounded with the impression that many people believe that celebrities have an easier time when it comes to legal justice as in the recent trials of O.J. Simpson and Robert Blake. The jury selection will continue on Monday so that six alternates can be selected and opening statements will begin on thursday of this week.

The murder of Run-DMC's Jam Master Jay (b. Jason Mizell) may soon be solved. In the December 2002 Jay was shot in the back of the head by an unknown assailant in his Queens studio.
It has been reported by the New York Daily Post that Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff, a convicted drug dealer and longtime friend of Murder Inc. heads Irv Gotti and Chris Gotti, targeted Mizell because he defied an industry blacklist of rapper 50 Cent that was imposed because of "Ghetto Qur'an", a song written about the drug history of McGriff

Prosecutors believe that either Ronald Washington was an accomplice or even the killer of Jay who has been convicted of several armed robberies since the murder. He is also a suspect in the 1995 killing of Randy Walker a friend of the late Tupac Shakur. Washington has denied any involvement in Jay's murder and alleges that the detectives have been hostile and hounded him about the killing of a Mizell who he says was a "childhood friend." A spokesperson for Jay's family have stated that they are happy that police have found a suspect and will be waiting when more information becomes available.

On a personal note this author believes that Jam Master Jay didn't deserve to die this way. The group Run-DMC was the first hip-hop/ rap group that I discovered. They have had some violence in the past at their concerts which they condoned and have pretty much remained above the violent lyrics that dominated hip-hop in the early nineties and today.
I wonder how the individual(s) could commit such a crime and not feel remorse ? Maybe, it was a "crime of passion" and given a different set of circumstances the outcome might have been that Jam Master Jay had lived and the issues could have been resolved peacefully.

The New York Post reports that the Suffolk County Magistrate of New York Aletha Fields-Ferraro has ordered rapper 50 Cent to pay $10,000 in child support for his ten year old son Marquise Jackson. The mother of the child Shaniqua Tomkins was also granted $15,000 a month for expenses that the rapper hasn't been paying. It is reported that when Fifty arrived at the courthouse to met with the magistrate he demanded VIP treatment caused a commotion and refused to go through metal detectors at the courthouse. The next court date is set for June 11 of this year.

Beyonce is being sued by Des'ree because according to her she didn't get permission to cover a song called "I'm Kissing You." Most know Des'ree for her 1994 hit "You gotta be."
The suit filed April 19th states that there was a deal for her to use the song originally but the fell through. Des'ree is seeking to put a stop to the distribution of the song. Beyonce featured the song on her solo album ' "B" Day-Deluxe Edition' and titled it "Still In Love (Kissing You).

WTF DEPT.

The seven month old Swedish baby named Metallica Tomaro will be allowed to keep her name. It wasn't the band that objected to the naming of the child rather the Swedish tax officials objected to the name. Because it was the name of a band and it resembled the word "metal" to closely. Karolina Tomaro the girls mother took her case to the county court where she won a victory over the taxing authority. They appealed the decision but dropped the appeal last week so Metallica will be able to keep her name.

MUSIC NOTES

Damon Albarn of the band 'Gorillaz' has confirmed that they won't release any more studio albums. He has said that the only project left for the band will be a film featuring a score composition that has been rumored to be linked to Terry Gilliam of Monty Python fame.
Albarn spoke to the BBC last week and said "We're trying to make a film next, starting in September hopefully. It will be a film score. There won't be another pop record." The virtual band was formed in 1999 with Damon Albarn, and Jamie Hewlett creator of the comic "Tank Girl" providing the design and background of the virtual band.
They have always been mysterious about who the members of the band were but it has been suggested that there are anywhere from two to fifty different individuals contributing to different aspects of the album. When the band played live there were specially designed screens on stage that projected the bands animated characters. Their first tour featured two screens on with animated characters the other with just silhouettes of the band playing instruments.
'Gorlliaz' had two albums the first being 'Gorillaz' which debuted in 2001 and the other 'Demon Days' which debuted in 2005. Singles from the two albums were "Clint Eastwood" and "Feel Good Inc."

They premiered the track on the first date of the 2006 tour at KB Hallen in Copenhagen, Denmark. They are getting ready to release a new album sometime in the summer or fall of this year.

Tom Morello the former lead singer of Rage Against the Machine has announced that he will release an album under the guise of "Nightwatchman" the disc will contain 13 tracks and have songs of bitterness, revenge, and a dark response to a world in turmoil. Morrissey has decided to snub the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame ceremonies that are to be held in 2008 for The Smiths. His ongoing rivalry with drummer Mike Joyce seems to be the reason. Morrissey and Joyce were involved in a lawsuit over The Smiths royalties and who deserved what amount. Since the lawsuit Morrissey has publicly stated that he hasn't forgiven him and the only way that he would show up would be if Joyce didn't attend.

Year Zero, Imagine, April Fools Day

What do all of these things have in common? They all took place in music this week,

NIN/Trent Reznor have a new release called 'Year Zero' which tells of an Orwellian America in the not to distant future and will be debuting on April 17th. They are using a form of guerrilla marketing where clues contained in the bands t-shirts spell out web site addresses that lead to an internet scavenger hunt fans can access the sites by adding the .COM suffix. A t-shirt with "anotherversionofthetruth.com" leads one to a website that tells more about the content of the upcoming disc. USB drives with copies of the songs have been found in the bathrooms at venue's where the band has performed. In Lisbon, Portugal a fan found a drive with the song "My Violent Heart" another fan in Barcelona, Spain found a drive with "Me I'm not' and in Manchester, England a drive containing "In this Twilight." Fans have swapped the songs and posted them on blogs and despite warnings from the RIAA the entire album has yet to be leaked online.
NIN/Reznor have always been a group that tries new ideas with their material whether it is the first Cd 'Pretty Hate Machine' which made Ministry and Nitzer Eb less interesting and made them sound like noise. The 1999 NIN release 'The Fragile' although not commercially successful was a creative comment on the music scene in a time of the "boy bands, pop divas" and general lack of talented bands that were popular at the time.

A group that has enjoyed popularity regardless of what they have do from using an accordion as a principal instrument and releasing two children's disc in the past two years are readying a new rock album They Might Be Giants are to release a disc titled 'The Else' and will contain 13 tracks some of the songs will be produced by the Dust Brothers who they have worked with on a 1993 remix of "Snail Shell."

John Flansburgh said that they came up with a couple of ways to work on the new songs, "we got loops from early on in the process, a huge collection of delightful drum loops. That's how we started a bunch of tracks." The Dust Brothers then came to New York and helped them re-assess the things we demoed and written on our own. New songs that received the producers treatment were "Take out the Trash" however, "I'm Impressed" is just John Flansburgh and John Linnell but it reflects working with the Dust Brothers.
TMBG will spend two weeks in May previewing the new material beginning May 3 in New Market NH and wrapping up May 19th in San Diego, CA at the Belly Up Tavern.

The upright piano that John Lennon wrote the song "Imagine" is on tour and this time it will be photographed on the hotel balcony where Martin Luther King Jr was shot and killed on April 4,1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. It was recently photographed on the grassy knoll near Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas where President John F. Kennedy was shot on November 22, 1963. The piano will also visit the World Trade Center site in New York City, Federal Building site in Oklahoma, and the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Tx. The theme of the photographs are about peace and how the song Imagine was a message from Lennon to humankind about why peace is important. The piano is owned by George Michael and he is planning on making a documentary of the tour and the photographs of the sites. Putting them in a book with the proceeds going to charities for peace.

Keith Richards caused a stir this week when he stated that in 2002 after his father died he took his cremated remains mixed them with a bit of cocaine and snorted the concoction. The Disney company was upset when they heard about this not because Keith is doing drugs but because he will be the father of Jack Sparrow in the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean 3 due in theaters this summer.
Later this week Richards said that he was joking being that it was April Fools Day whether he did this or not may explain why he fell out of tree a few years ago while on vacation in Fiji

YOU TUBE AWARDS

You Tube video awards

The You Tube video awards were handed out Monday by the video sharing site. This was the first awards given by the online site. The nominees of the best videos were listed in ten categories. Viewers had all week to vote for their favorite and in the music category the band Ok Go and Terra Naomi won a music awards . Ok Go won an award for the video to their song " Here It Goes Again.'"

The video is of the band using three sets of treadmills to make it look as if they are dancing to the song and is funny and clever. This is probably the most use a treadmill will receive by the members of the band. Terra Naomi won for her song " Say It's Possible" the video is of her with an acoustic guitar singing. She has used her appearance to get a deal with Island Records and will release her debut album in the summer.

Elton turns the big 60 !

Elton John celebrated his sixtieth birthday with his sixtieth concert at Madison Square Garden in New York on March 25. Elton sang thirty three of his hits in a three hour set and was joined by the Brooklyn Boys Choir. An audience of celebrities watched and Whoopi Goldberg, Robin Williams briefly joined him onstage. Williams said the John wore a tuxedo that made "Liberace look amish," other celebrities in the audience were Michael Caine, Rosie O'Donnnell, k.d. Lang, and Sharon Osborne.
Former president Bill Clinton also paid tribute to John's work in raising awareness and helping people with the AIDS virus. Bernie Taupin a longtime lyricist led the audience in singing happy birthday to John. John said " without Bernie none of us would be here tonight because the words have always come first."

In other Elton news the church leaders of the island country of Tobago have demanded that Elton John not play a concert scheduled to play the Plymouth Jazz Festival on April 29 th because he is gay and "have a negative social impact on the people " and " some may not be sure of their sexuality."
The political leaders of the country dismiss this idea and back John's performance at the festival. One of the organizers of the event insisted that " His band has performed in every country in the world. He is not coming here to preach about what lifestyle people should have."

Musical Notes

U2 guitarist The Edge donated his 1975 Les Gibson guitar that he has been using for ages to be auctioned off for Music Rising a program to replace musical instruments lost in New Orleans during hurricane Katrina and the flood that followed. Edge said " I wanted to give something really significant and that would really mean alot for me to give."

Lead singer of KISS Gene Simmons has made it clear that he isn't interested in a reunion of the original band lineup. He is quoted as saying "I personally don't want to, I love Ace and Peter, always have ,and because of my tough love I've never been shy about saying that they have always been drug addicts and alcoholics and they've destroyed themselves." At least you can say that he is honest.

Damon Albarn former lead singer of the band Blur/ Gorillaz has written an opera that will premiere at the Manchester International Festival. The opera is said to be based on the Chinese tale of the monkey and will be a "circus opera" which tells of the monkey's journey to the west and will feature a 45 piece troupe from China, Shaolin Monks, and martial arts experts. The White Stripes have released the track listing for their new album "Icky Thump" which will debut sometime in June. The O.C. and Gray's Anatomy have influenced musical tastes by what they play during the episodes will have a label called Chop Shop Records with Warner Brothers . The label will be managed by Alexandra Patsavas the music supervisor responsible for the music on these shows.

The group Nickelback's album "All the Right Reasons" has remained on the charts for 18 months and the band continues to sell out their concerts while other bands struggle to have even some of the same success? Music critics and those who appreciate quality music loathe this band and are puzzled as to why they are so successful. Chad Kroeger the bands lead singer has said that the bands music is all over the map and appeals to a large audience and he doesn't listen to what the critics think. His song-writing technique is also very detailed, "He'll write a lyric or chorus and go back and say this chorus or that word isn't right and he can spend weeks writing the perfect song and melodies," said Kara DioGuardi who recently worked with him on another project.
Nickelback's influence has also reached beyond their hits. A charitable campaign for "If Everyone Cared" has raised over $200,000 according to Kroeger, " We wanted to inspire the people who saw the video and show that you don't need a team of personnel, you don't need alot of money to make a change in the world."

Another band that enjoyed popularity during the early to mid nineties and to the chagrin of critics are The Black Crowes. They are said to be in the studio and working with producer Paul Stacey in New York and Los Angeles. The album will be their first in six years

The band Tapes and Tapes have been working on their second album and will record it this summer. The next disc is to be different from their first one. Lead singer Josh Grier said " It's pretty much the same group of guys" but I'm sure there's going to be at least for us a song-writing growth."

Marilyn Manson musician, author, and one who strives to tick off the religious right is now showing his other artistic side. His watercolor artworks that he has painted over the years are to be displayed in Ft. Myers, Florida. Manson will be touring with the metal band Slayer. They will play 25 cities across the U.S. between July and September. Manson's album "Eat Me, Drink Me" will debut in June.

Amy Winehouse a british soul singer who's breakthrough album Back To Black has seen some chart success in the U.S. cancelled two shows in the U.S. and two more in the U.K. which were to be held at Shepards Bush Empire in London last week Apparently, the star who is known for her debauchery onstage and off fell during a drunken episode and smashed out her front teeth which required dental surgery. The canceled Empire shows will be made up on May 28th and 29th. It isn't known if there are any make up dates for the U.S. shows.

The Happy Mondays will release their first album in 15 years and are set to make their first full comeback since 1992's disc 'Yes Please'. Shaun Ryder the lead singer of the band says that they are working with Howie B and Sonny Levine to produce the album. He says that their sound is fresher than their first album ' Pills, Thrills, and Bellyaches,' "I'm no the world's greatest salesman, me I'm not a salesman at all (but) I think it's a really great album" said Ryder.

Legal Dept.

Celebrities were busy in court this week the first Velvet Revolver's lead singer Scott Weiland's wife and an alleged altercation at a Burbank Hotel and the destruction of clothing taking place outside their home. The couple have been married seven years and Scott went into rehab three years ago and has been sober since.
Mary Weiland released a statement to the supposed altercation with her husband and vandalism of two hotel rooms at the Graceila Hotel in Burbank, California. Late she set some of his clothes on fire outside their home and police responded to a call that a woman was burning something in a trash can, she was booked for investigation of felony arson and vandalism. Scott Weiland told police that $10,000 of his wardrobe went up in smoke.
She says the incidents were brought on by a "reaction to an imbalance in medication she takes to treat a bipolar disorder." "Reports that we were fighting outside the hotel are not true," Scott was merely trying to help me calm down , I want to make it very clear that he didn't hurt me in any way, I am grateful to my have a loving husband who is able to take care of me during this challenging time." The couple have apologized and paid for the damage to hotel as for the vandalism, arson charges against her the district attorney's office hasn't file them against her.

Wynonna Judd has filed for divorce from her estranged husband Dan R. Roach after his arrest last week on a charges of sex involving a minor. Roach was arrested in Abeline and charged with three counts of sexual battery against a child under the age of thirteen then extradited to Nashville where the charges originated. The Nashville police department had been investigating him for sex crimes and has been since February. Roach had been receiving treatment for drug and alcohol addiction at a clinic in Buffalo Gap, Texas. Wynonna cited irreconcilable differences as a reason for the divorce and they had been separated since Feb 18 of this year. They were married in November of 2003 and have no children together.

Britney Spears fresh from rehab finalized the divorce with Kevin Federline this week. According, to their lawyers they have reached a " global divorce agreement regarding the issues of their marriage," which includes the custody of their two children.
Britney had dental surgery earlier this week and after her visit to the dentist she met with her ex husband's lawyers for five hours. They both signed the agreement but the terms and the settlement weren't disclosed. It is rumored that Federline will walk away with $ 1 million and joint physical custody of the children however that wasn't confirmed.

Eminem and his ex wife Kim Mathers agreed in court to stop criticizing each other in public for the sake of their daughter have apparently decided not to honor that agreement other than inside the courtroom. On tuesday Kim was being interviewed on New York's Hot 97 and spoke about their relationship. She spoke of his recent legal action to stop her and said " how many songs does he have about me?" she has been the subject of his songs " Cleaning out my closet," and " Mockingbird." She went on to say that he does interviews about the freedom of speech and that she has only done a couple about their relationship. Eminem cries like a "little girl." Kim accused him of being disconnected from reality and revealed that she really has no contact with him despite living a mile away from him.

Former lead singer Anthony Lovato of the band MEST was arrested last Sunday for suspicion of stabbing and killing a 25 year old man during an argument in an apartment building parking lot in Los Angeles.
Police arrived at the scene and found a man lying on the ground with knife wounds he later died at the hospital. A lieutenant with the department said that Lovato called 911 and remained at the scene to surrender himself to the police. They had been called on Saturday evening to the same apartment complex where the two men were fighting at a woman's apartment that they both had been previously dating but no one was arrested.
Lovato has avoided a murder charge because LA County District Attorney won't file charges against him because "there is insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the killing was not a justifiable use of reasonable force in self defense." Lovato has maintained that he stabbed the man in self defense, this along with his cooperation with police helped his case. MEST formed in Blue Island, IL in 1995 and had a hit in 1998 with the single ' Mo Money, Mo 40 oz' and went on to release four albums on the Maverick label which is owned by Madonna the band broke up in January 2006.

Busta Rhymes (b. Trevor Smith) is set to face misdemeanor assault charges in two separate incidents. He is accused of kicking and punching a former employee during an argument outside his office in Manhattan the day after Christmas, and he 's also accused of assaulting a fan who allegedly spit on his car after a performance at the Amsterjam Music Festival .
Manhattan Criminal Court judge Tanya Kennedy retracted a plea deal that was made earlier this year and set a court date for May 8th. Busta Rhymes who recently refused a deal that would have allowed him to plead guilty but enroll in anger management class and do community service in order to avoid jail time. If he is convicted he could be sentenced to more that a year in jail and fined $500.

WTF Dept.
( I am not making this up)

Michael Jackson is to have a 50 foot robotic replica of himself that will shoot laser beams from the eyes and is to roam the desert near Las Vegas Nv. It is to be the centerpiece of an elaborate show in the city which he is rumored to be currently residing in. If built the robot would be visible from the incoming airplanes coming into the gambling capitol of the world. Luckmann Van Pier has drawn up blueprints for the robot and according to Andre Van Pier Michael has seen them and likes them alot. It doesn't surprise this author is surprised that he likes them because his ego is at least twice the same size of the robot here is a perfect example of someone who has either too much money or not enough sense.
